Energy is Everything

Exactly what is energy?  Can it be seen?  Or is it invisible?  The answer to both questions is “YES!”   Einstein’s theory of relativity said it best.  He said that (E=MC2) “Energy equals Mass times the speed of light (C) squared (2). Think about that for a minute, really try to grasp the equation.   I am not a scientist, but just thinking about that equation blows my mind.  Think about mass (everything we see) times the speed of light. Just that part of the equation is unfathomable.   But then the final step is to take that number and multiply it by itself.  The answer is incomprehensible.  In essence Einstein was saying everything is energy.  In fact, Einstein later said; “Concerning matter, we have all been wrong.  What we have called matter is energy whose vibration has been lowered as to be perceptible to our senses.  There is no matter.”

So, yes, you can see energy.   All that we see with our human eyes is energy vibrating at differing speeds.  Objects that appear to be solid vibrate slowly while living objects vibrate more rapidly.  And since there are no empty spaces, most of the energy around us vibrates so rapidly that our human eyes cannot see it.  So, yes, also to the second question.  Most energy is invisible to our human eyes.   We cannot see it, but we can feel it……and we can sense it.  Have you ever walked into a room and immediately sensed the atmosphere in the room?  Without talking to anyone you can sense an energy of tension and discord.  Or, on the other hand, you can feel a spirit of love, cooperation, and harmony.

So where does this ability come from?  It comes from your heart.  Your heart is a sensing organ…..far more sensitive than your brain.  We have been taught our brain is the most powerful sensing organ in our body and and we need to use the brain’s reasoning power to guide our actions.   Having said that, we all know that many of our most important decisions are based more on our emotions than our logical mind.  New science confirms the most powerful organ in our body is our heart.   The heart possesses powerful wisdom and might hold the key to spontaneous evolution of our species.  HeartMath researchers have found that the impact of love is real and biochemically measurable.  The heart is the interface between consciousness and the physiologic responses that generate emotions.

In 1992 stress researcher Doc Childre founded the Institute of HeartMath dedicated to investigating the power of our hearts.  Childre and Howard Martin in their book, The HeartMath Solution wrote; “Heart intelligence is the intelligent flow of awareness that we experience once the mind and bodily emotions are brought into balance.”

In the 1970s, psychologists from the Fels Research Institute discovered the heart has its own nervous system of at least 40,000 neurons which communicate with brain centers including the amygdala, the thalamus, and the cerebral cortex.  Research revealed that the heart does not automatically obey the brain’s messages, but employs its own distinctive logic.  Heartbeats are not merely mechanical rhythms but are the intelligent language of the heart.  EKG patterns when analyzed show the heart has more to do with behavioral reactions and perceptions than Western science has ever imagined.  They found the heart’s influence on the field is empowered by its own magnetic activity which is 5,000 times more powerful than that of the brain, and using current technology this field can be read up to ten feet away from the body.

By focusing attention on our heart, science has actually tracked the pathway by which love heals.  When synchronization between our heart and brain is increased, it calms our nervous system and deactivates the stress response and brings our body into a coherent state.  Our body then begins to conserve vital energy for growth and maintenance.

Love generates measurable quantifiable heart field coherence.  Negative emotions create incoherence and disharmony in the heart’s field.  So when you enter that room filled with discord, those negative emotions are being broadcast and your heart is influenced by those emotions.  Your heart is being influenced by the emotion of others.  You are also influenced by love or caring.  Actually the electrical activity of the two communicating hearts and brains become entangled and begin to entrain with one another.

The Institute of HeartMath and the Global Coherence Initiative have teamed up to teach participants how to bring their hearts into a coherent state.  It is believed mankind can affect the world through the coordinated influence of millions of people who practice heart-focused care and intention to shift global consciousness from instability and discord, to balance, cooperation and enduring peace.

Yesterday was America’s birthday!  America’s independence from the rule of Great Britain was declared on July 4th, 1776, two hundred thirty eight years ago.  As we reflect on this milestone, we are reminded of those principles upon which our nation is founded.

George Washington said; “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

Patrick Henry said; “There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us……is life so dear, or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?  Forbid it, Almighty God!  I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.”

As the colonists became more and more upset with Great Britain for unjust taxation without representation, acts of rebellion began in 1774.  After one full year of trying to resolve the taxation issues with Great Britain, full-fledged acts of rebellion and fighting began at Lexington and Concord in April 1774.  By April 1775 the colonist Patriots had full control of all thirteen colonies.  In May, 1776, the colonists sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress where a committee was formed to compose a formal Declaration of Independence, headed by Thomas Jefferson.  Other committee members included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Phillip Livingston and Roger Sherman.  Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to congress on June 28, 1776.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared independence and the Revolutionary War began.  The fifty six signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign the declaration on July 4, 1776.  Officially the first 50 signatures were added on the 2nd of August 1776.  The last man to add his name to the document was Thomas McKean in January 1777.   The signer’s names were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers because if independence had not been won, they would have been tried and put to death for treason.

While congress was occupied with the Revolutionary War, the first Independence Day was celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, when the Liberty Bell first sounded from the tower of Independence Hall.  It rang to summon the citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence as read by Colonel John Nixon.

Legend has it that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776.  On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress in a declaration intended to promote national pride, adopted the national flag; ”Resolved; that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing the new constellation.”

Historians tell us that George Washington issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers to mark the second anniversary of independence in 1778.

With the valuable aid of France, Spain and the Dutch Republic, the Revolutionary War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Mangalore in 1784.   Our founding fathers believed in celebrating our independence with fireworks.  John Adams in a letter to his wife stated that the holiday deserves to be celebrated with “illuminations” or fireworks.  “The day will be most memorable in the history of America.  I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.  It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

July 4th is one of the few federal holidays that has not be moved to the nearest Friday of Monday. While many states declared the 4th of July as a state holiday, it was not until July 4, 1941 that it was declared a federal holiday

The unofficial theme song for Independence Day was first played on July 4, 1897.  On that Sunday afternoon, John Philip Sousa cued his band as he lifted his baton to play his latest hit, ’The Stars and Stripes Forever.”  Since that day Sousa’s beloved song has been played by marching bands in 4th of July parades all across the nation.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams did not always agree with one another, but they had a profound love and respect for one another and for the nation they worked so hard to found.  Both died on July 4th, 1826.

As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, let’s remember the importance of this special day and those brave men who put their lives and property on the line to insure our freedom.

The Limited View of the Microscope

We’re looking through a microscope believing we’re seeing the whole picture. Sounds crazy doesn’t it. But that’s exactly what many are doing when it comes to Global warming. Modern science began approximately 350 years ago. Using the data collected over this 350 year span has caused many incorrect assumptions. To understand what is happening globally we need thousands of years of information. Only then can we determine what is natural or normal; as compared to something directly caused by man and his use of fossil fuels.

Whenever politicians get involved with science, the information gets skewed to further political agendas. That’s exactly what’s happening now with Global warming. Since modern science is fairly new, where can we go to get the data needed to determine what is within the realm of normal for planet earth? Aided with the right information we can determine what actions will best serve humanity. Then we can focus on mitigating problems created by Global warming and stop wasting our time on things not within our control.

Global warming is causing rising sea levels.   Some islands and low lands are now experiencing serious problems. There are islands in the Pacific that are quickly disappearing and those living there need help. The Pacific Island chain of Kiribati is being inundated. The 103,000 islanders are watching their beaches disappear. Their sewage lines are flooded, and their landfill is now a floating garbage heap. Their fresh water supply is limited and in danger of becoming poisoned by the invading salt water. The island has become a disaster zone. The island is very poor, but thanks to the generosity of Fiji, Kiribati’s president Anote Tong is in the process of purchasing 5,000 acres in Fiji for $9,600,000. Eventually these islanders will make a pilgrimage to Fiji where they will be able to preserve their culture.   A goal of Kiribati’s people is to acquire the skills needed to become productive residents of Fiji. They want to be self-sufficient and do not want to be considered a burden to Fiji. This is the kind of cooperation needed during this life altering crisis.

In other areas melting glaciers are diluting salt levels causing problems for sea life unable to adapt. It is feared some aquatic life may become extinct.  We need to do what we can do and understand there will be changes we have no power to forestall.

When we look at our world through a limited perspective such as we see through a microscope, we cannot see the bigger picture. Information gathered from drilling into the Arctic’s Ice Core provides 400,000 years of information which assures us global warming and cooling are part of the natural cycles of earth. CO2 levels are shown to lag behind increasing temperatures showing that CO2 levels are not causing the warming.

We need to get serious about helping those affected by global warming and stop ranting about CO2 as the cause. Of course, we need to clean up the air for many, many excellent reasons but we are foolish if we think it will stop the natural heating and cooling cycles of earth.   Clean air is healthy and for that reason it needs to be a top priority. We want clean air for our children and our children’s children.

We need to educate society about changes occurring in our weather patterns directly affected by our sun and earth’s position in its orbit through the universe. Earth recently completed a 25,525 year orbit. And because of our position in the universe and our proximity to the sun, we have experienced and are still experiencing many violent weather patterns. When humanity gets to a point where we stop pointing fingers of blame and get serious about working together to help those affected by warming and weather, humanity will have taken a huge leap forward.

Reconnective Healing and Eric Pearl, Part 2

Dr. Eric Pearl’s book, Reconnective Healing, tells of his journey to learn how to effectively use Reconnective Healing energy.  Dr. Pearl wanted to gain an understanding of the Reconnective Healing that came through him.  People were asking him to teach them how to use Reconnective Healing and he really didn’t understand what it was let alone have an idea how to teach it.   This energy came to him without asking for it or understanding it.  He had always been a firm believer in proven scientific principles so he was eager to work with the scientific community to verify Reconnective Healing.  He also spent several years talking to other healers trying to figure out how to properly use the energy.

Dr. Pearl said he had to go through his life path to gain certain ways of learning. He needed to learn how to speak about things, how to explore them and share them with others.  He also said the more he used the techniques used by other healers, the less healing s took place.

He was told to shake off negative energy to protect himself, to light candles, to use crystals, to approach his patients from a particular side, to use his hands in a particular way, to direct the energy and many more techniques. But the more he practiced these techniques, the less healings took place.

He finally realized he needed to release fear, lack and limitation and step into abundance. The Reconnective energy did not require procedure.  It led by awareness.  It transcends technique.  He needed to step out of technique into love realizing he did not need to protect himself.  He found the answers are always in the inquiry – never in the process.  His role in Reconnective Healing is to be the witness and observer:  He became a catalyst for healing.  His part was to open the door.  The patient’s part is to have the courage to choose to walk through that door.  The Reconnective energy knows its way home.  Dr. Peal realized that his responsibility was to transcend ego enough to allow the energy to find its own path.

Dr. Pearl assures us there is no one great healer on this planet where we need to travel.  There is only one special healer we need to learn to access.  To see who it is…..look in the mirror.

International research and multiple studies show:

1. Healings are instantaneous and,

2.  Tend to be life lasting.

Research has also shown that a body does not heal the way we have been taught which is the Bio-Chemical model.  Of course, we know bio-chemicals do play a role in the process, but the Bio-Chemical model is obsolete. The body heals through Frequency, vibration, energy and entrainment which is communicated through light. Light explains how something can happen in one part of the body and immediately affect another part of the body.  Light waves can be everywhere at once.

Researchers found that DNA emits specific levels of light.   Optimal light levels indicate optimal health.  If our DNA light levels fall below optimal, our health declines. Human DNA light levels are different than other animals.  Our spiritual traditions have always taught that we are beings of light.  Now science is substantiating it.

Six independent studies show that Reconnective Healing heals intentional and non-intentional damage to DNA in plants and humans. Reconnective Healing restructures (or reconnects) DNA and makes the light emissions that come from it more coherent or more harmonious.  These levels of light are a reminder that you and I have the potential of returning to our natural light level.  As we vibrate at the higher level of light, anything denser has nothing to hold on to and these densities and imbalances fall away.

This return of light healing is just that simple and anything more complicated than that such as crystals, wands, ceremonies, symbols in the air, candles are unnecessary. Anything more complicated than that is designed to sell the illusion that we are less than abundantly enough.

Our brains don’t function the way we were taught. Our brains are transducers that receive information from a larger field of information that science now refers to a “Zero Point Field.”  The old beliefs about our brain teach that speech is found in one part of the brain, memory in another, language in another and so on.  But new research proves information is not sitting in compact little areas although the information is found throughout our brains.  In fact, it is not located in the brain to begin with.  Our brains are transducers that receive information from a larger field of information that science today refers to as “Zero Point Field.”

In the late 1800’s science was horrified that otherwise intelligent adults believed in an invisible etheric field. So science set out to disprove it.  Science thought they had disproved it, but ‘the field’ itself didn’t know it was disproved so it came back in the 1920’s. Science again thought they had disproved it.  Now with quantum physics science realizes it is true.  Science is now using it and they have named it “Zero Point Field.”   When you think of someone and all of a sudden they call….you’re in this field.  Healers and psychics play in this field all the time.  Lynn McTaggart has written a fascinating book, The Field which documents the use of the field.

A computer is little more than a box until software in installed. Once software is installed you suddenly get lots of new information from the internet.  Then if you get a software upgrade, you can get even more information from the internet.  What if our brains are the hardware and DNA is the software?  What if studies confirm Reconnective Healing repairs and restores DNA?  What if you find yourself facilitating a human software upgrade to the person with whom you interact?  It allows a change in the DNA because there is a change in the light emission and a change in your awareness of our brains.  We are becoming more multi-dimensional beings.

Many years ago science and religion parted ways. And it appeared as though they were getting farther and farther apart.  But our worlds is round and now we find science and religion are returning from their long journeys to recognize that they didn’t walk away, they walked toward each other with gifts of support.  We are on a journey.  We are evolving and returning to truth and the more truth the more satisfaction.  The reality beyond truth is light.  Light doesn’t blind.  Light is neutral.  It is your interpretation as to whether to blind or whether you allow it to illuminate.  We often experience life as if we do not have a choice, yet we do have a choice.  We live in a free will universe whether we like it or not.

We are standing on the next level of human evolution and all we need to do is witness and observe it to become part of it. Scientists have discovered what they call ‘junk DNA.’  They state we have 2 active strands and 10 inactive strands.  When Dr.Pearl first began his journey of Reconnective Healing, many of his patients while receiving Reconnective Healing would recite to him; “You are here to reconnect strands,” or “you are here to reconnect strings.”  At that time Dr. Pearl did not understand what they meant and his patients surely did not understand what they were saying.  Dr.Pearl now believes Reconnective Healing does affect strands and strings of DNA.  He believes that the third DNA strand is being restored which will make us much stronger.

Right now, humanity experiences three dimensions…..height, width and depth. During the 1950s Einstein tried to convince science of the existence of a fourth dimension… time.  It took until the year 2000 for science to accept that time is moving faster in all directions at once and in fact it is an illusion.

Energy and Dr. Eric Pearl, Part 1

DNA Image Albert Einstein said; “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as though everything is a miracle.”  I choose the later.  As I look around, I see miracles abound.  I see many people coming forward in the world who are blessed with the ability to not only see the miracles, but to participate in them.  One of these people is Dr. Eric Pearl.

Dr. Pearl practiced chiropractics, building his business into one of the largest in Los Angeles. One afternoon Gary, a young and healthy man came to be treated for his lifelong back pain.  Dr. Pearl’s office was on the second floor of a building with no elevator.  As Gary came into view he was moving in a series of one-step lunges, pausing between each step.  His right leg was several inches shorter than his left and his right hip was much higher in placement.  Dr. Pearl decided not to go out to help Gary make it up the last couple of steps.  Gary’s face showed the absolute determination of a mountain climber and Dr. Pearl did not want to interfere with Gary’s sense of triumph.

Because of his deformity, Gary swung his right hip outward, and then with an exaggerated limp he would thrust his body forward with each step. His two legs acted as one larger leg as his right foot turned inward and rested atop his left leg balancing his upper body. His back was arched at about 30 degrees so he would not fall over.  He had suffered from childhood with intense back problems.  Gary explained that at the time of his birth, the doctor had cut his umbilical cord too soon interrupting his supply of oxygen.  When his lungs took over, the damage to his brain was affected so that the right side of his body failed to develop symmetrically.

By the age of 14, Gary had visited more than 20 doctors trying to fix his condition. Surgery was performed, but it did not help.  He tried orthopedic shoes and wore leg braces, but still no improvement.  He was troubled with spasms in his right leg which were becoming more and more violent.  Doctors prescribed antispasmodics which didn’t give him relief, but dulled and disoriented him.

He finally ended up in the office of a famous specialist. He had high hope this specialist who was very highly regarded could finally get him the relief he so desperately needed.  His hopes were dashed when the doctor looked him in the eyes and told him there was nothing he could do.  He was told his problems would only get worse as he aged and he would eventually end up in a wheel chair.  Totally dejected Gary “mentally wrote off the medical establishment.”

That was thirteen years ago. Then one day a previous patient suggested Gary might get relief from Dr. Eric Pearl.  Now Gary was in Dr. Pearl’s office with high expectations that he might finally get some relief.  Dr. Pearl took Gary into another room and had him lie down on a table where his neck was adjusted.  He was then instructed to return in 48 hours for a reevaluation.

Gary returned as scheduled and again Dr. Pearl had him lie on the table where he quickly gave him an adjustment.  This time, however, Gary was asked to relax and close his eyes…….and not to open them until Dr. Pearl instructed him to do so.  Dr. Pearl brought his hands, palms down about a foot over Gary’s torso.  He moved his hands until he held them over his temples.  He then moved his hands to Gary’s feet.  Gary was having very strong reactions to the energy he was feeling pouring into his body through Dr. Pearl.  His eyes although closed began darting, His foot began pumping and rotating.  Dr. Pearl gently placed his hands on Gary’s right hip.  Gary’s right foot began to move again in a pumping fashion, and then rotating in and out, in and out.

Dr. Pearl waited and when the movement stopped, he removed his hands from Gary’s hip. Then gently touched him saying; “Gary?  I think we’re finished.”   After about thirty seconds, Gary opened his eyes.  Dr. Pearl writes in his book, THE RECONNECTION; “Gary looked a little dazed.  ‘My foot was moving’ he told me, as if I hadn’t seen it.  ‘I could feel it, but I couldn’t stop it.  I felt really hot all over, then I felt some kind of energy building up in my right calf.  Then…..you’ll think its crazy, but it felt as if invisible hands were turning my foot, yet it didn’t feel like hands at all.”

“You can stand up now,” I said, doing my best not to appear nonplused, yet still trying to take it all in myself. Gary stood up – for the first time in his 26 years – six feet tall, with two independent legs. “

“I watched in grateful amazement as Gary stood there; His spine was straight, and his hips were level and balanced. His expression began to reflect his own understanding of what had just happened.  As he took a couple of tentative steps, I could tell that a bit of the limp remained, but nothing like the lurching leg-swing of before.  Not even close.  Gary left my office with an enormous smile on his face, and I watched him walk gracefully down the steps.”

As Dr. Pearl began working with this energy that began manifesting through him, he found that many of his patients were having amazing healings, they saw colors they had never seen before, several were repeating phrases to Dr. Pearl which he did not understand, many felt the presence of others in the room, still others experienced healings of those close to them after being treated by Dr. Pearl. This began happening in the early 90’s and since then there have been many prestigious studies on Reconnective Healing and the healing of DNA.  I recommend Dr. Eric Pearl’s book, THE RECONNECTION, Heal Others, Heal Yourself.

Till Death Do Us Part

“Do you take this man to be your husband, to love, honor and cherish him, and to cleave unto him and none other so long as you both shall live?” “I do!”  “By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you man and wife, legally and lawfully married for the rest of your life.  Till death do us part”  And so married life begins for the happy couple.

Recently I attended a wedding ceremony.  Prior to the ceremony, the officiator gave the happy couple some sage advice;  “If you will always put the needs of your spouse before your own, you will have a long and happy marriage.”  Let’s take a look at this advice……is it true?   Is it possible to create a long and happy marriage using this advice as a guide?

My answer to this question is both “Yes” and “No”.  I believe the foundation for a long and happy marriage must be authenticity.  If you can be yourself authentically while putting his/her needs before your own; “Yes” is the answer.  But if you cannot be authentic while placing his/her needs before your own…..the answer is “No”.

The biggest challenge in marriage is maintaining authenticity.  We must feel free to reveal ourselves authentically to one another. Our innermost desire is to be loved for who we are.  As Neale Donald Walsch wrote in his LILTTLE BOOK OF LIFE; “I want to have a friendship with God, and I want to have a friendship with my spouse and all my loved ones, of such quality that I can stand naked before them, mentally as well as physically and say; ‘This is it – there is nothing hidden, there are no hidden agendas.  This is all of it.”

Authenticity in marriage brings transparency….telling the truth. It means feeling comfortable enough with one another to speak our truth knowing we will be loved even when we have differing opinions.  Quoting from the LITTLE BOOK OF LIFE:

“The first level of truth telling is when you tell the truth to yourself about yourself.”

“The second level of truth telling is when you tell the truth to yourself about another.”

“The third level of truth telling is when I tell the truth about myself to another.”

“And the fourth level of truth telling is when I tell the truth about another, to that other – my truth, of course, not the truth. The truth, objectively, doesn’t exist, but I share my innermost truth about another, with that other.

“The fifth level of truth telling, when you get there, is when you tell the truth to everyone about everything. And if you can take these five steps, you’ve taken five steps to Heaven, because Heaven is not having to lie anymore.”

I have been married to Kermit for 51 years, and I believe one of the strongest foundations for our marriage is acceptance. In all our years of marriage, Kermit has accepted me for who I am.  He has not tried to change me.  He does not always agree with me, but he accepts me and loves me for who I am and in spite of my faults.  I don’t recall of a single time in our marriage when he told me I could not do what I wanted to do.  And I have done the same for him.  “No, you cannot,” is not a phrase used in our marriage.

THE LITTLE BOOK OF LIFE goes on to say; “And by the way, I want to say again, that’s the largest key, if there is a key; I must stop looking to another for the peace and joy for which I have so long searched, and realize that that for which I have searched resides within me.  My grandest joy and my greatest peace is experienced when I provide for another; in those moments, I am unlocking the greatest mystery and greatest secret of all time.”

So, back to my original question….Can one put the needs of another before one’s own as a guide to a happy marriage? What do you think?  What is your truth?

A Monument Worthy to Honor George Washington

Take a trip to our nation’s capital and you will be amazed at the history, beauty and spirit of this great city. When I first visited, I was in awe of the architectural beauty and massive size of many buildings such as the Treasury Building.  I had never before seen a building that took up the space of a full city block.  One thing you will notice is the skyline is not filled with skyscrapers.  Thomas Jefferson’s plan for the city was that it would have a “Light and Airy” feel, similar to Paris.

On Washington’s 100th birthday, the Washington National Monument Society was formed by John Marshall and James Madison.  The society sponsored a design competition.  Robert Mills who had recently completed a memorial of Washington in Baltimore won that competition.  He proposed a 600 ft. flat topped obelisk ringed by thirty 100 ft. columns and surrounded by a neoclassical round base.

In 1848, soon after the cornerstone was laid on the foundation, Robert Mills died. The project was then given to Lt. Col. Thomas Lincoln Casey.  Casey modified the original design by adding a peak, omitting the round base and thirty columns. Construction began using marble from a quarry in Baltimore and continued for 20 years bringing the structure to a height of 152 feet.  Construction was halted in 1850 due to lack of funding. The lack of funding was partially due to the Civil War and partially because a group aligned with the “Know Nothing Party” had taken over the Washington National Monument Society through election to the board. This group was so unpopular donations came to a stand-still.  The monument stood unfinished for thirty two years.  Then in July, 1876 Congress assumed the duty of funding and building the monument.

The Army Corps of Engineers determined that the foundation was not strong enough to bear the weight of a structure 600 feet in height,  So after reinforcing the foundation, they determined the height should be 555 feet which is ten times the width of the foundation of 55 feet. In August, 1880, construction began again. Since stone from the original quarry was no longer available, stone from a quarry in Massachusetts was used. After adding a couple of layers of the new stone, it was obvious the stone had a noticeably brownish hue.  The builders searched for a lighter stone.   A much better match was found in another quarry in Baltimore. If you look closely at the monument, you can see the difference in the color of the stones at the bottom compared to those at the top.  If you look even more closely you can see the slightly brownish ring just above 152 feet.

It took 100 years from the death of George Washington to complete the monument. The capstone weighing 3300 pounds topped with an aluminum cap was set December 6, 1884.  The monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885, and officially opened in October 1988.  It is the tallest obelisk in the world.  The walls at the base are 15 feet thick.  Its weight is 81,120 tons.  A climb of 896 stairs takes you to the top. There are 193 commerative stones that can be seen as you climb to the top.  Three Biblical scriptures adorn the walls:  Proverbs 10 – 7, Proverbs 22 – 6, and Luke 17 – 6. By law, there can be no building in Washington DC taller than the Washington Monument.

The monument is full of symbolism. There can be no doubt that our founding fathers were men of faith in God.  It was never their intent to build a government devoid of reference to God.  They did intend that the government would NEVER sponsor a religion, but it was never intended that belief in God be omitted from government.  Many visitors visit the monument to see the awesome view from the top.   The views of North, South, East, and West form a cross.   The North view is of the White House, from the South, the Jefferson Memorial, from the East, the Capital and from the West, the Lincoln Memorial.  The distance from the Capital to the Lincoln Memorial is 1.9 miles.  The reflection pool is about 1/3 of a mile long and is next to the Lincoln Memorial.   The Washington Memorial’s reflection is from almost a mile away.  That’s awesome.

Many have visited the monument since it was completed. Most are totally unaware of the inscriptions on the capstone.  On the North the names of the six Joint Commission members at the setting of the capstone are inscribed with the date of August 2, 1876.  On the South the names of four assistants are inscribed along with the Master Mechanic, P.H. McLaughlin.  On the West, the dates of the setting of the cornerstone on July 4, 1848, the first stone at 153 feet, August 7, 1880, and the Capstone set date of December 6, 1884.

The East side facing the rising sun bears a Latin inscription, very symbolically placed at the highest point over the most powerful city in the world; LAUS DEO, meaning Praise be to God.

George Washington, America’s First Great Hero

George WashingtonAs Americans we honor the memory of the Father of our country, George Washington. He is considered to be the one person who is indispensable in American history.   At a very young age, George had a strong desire to be considered a person of integrity and honor.  He had a strong sense of duty and worked hard to set an example of fairness, prudence and integrity.   He loved fencing, dancing and horsemanship. And at a young age considered himself to be a loyal British subject.

The only time he left the country was when he travelled to the Caribbean with his half-brother Lawrence. While there he became ill with small pox.  He recovered, but his face was permanently marred with small pox scars.   At the age of twenty he inherited his family’s estate, Mount Vernon.

He was a commanding figure and it is said when he entered a room, he carried himself with poise and dignity which brought great respect and a sense of command. He stood six feet 3 ½ inches tall and weighed about 190 pounds.  He was very strong and athletic. He loved his beautiful white horse, Nelson.  Sometimes he would ride in a carriage, but when he got close to town, he would mount Nelson and ride into town.  The sight of this perfectly groomed gentleman on his beautiful white horse was awesome.

As time passed and the British began over-taxing the colonies, Washington reluctantly realized that the colonies could not flourish under the demands of the British crown. He became a general during the American Revolutionary War. He molded a rag-tag group of farmers into a disciplined fighting machine.  He gave his men direction and motivation. During the frigid desperate days of Valley Forge, he remained with his men.  The situation was bleak.  There was a lack of food and clothing with some of the men actually fighting without shoes.   Many were ill and at least 2,000 of the 12,000 soldiers under his command died of disease.  His men knew he cared about them and he earned their love. Valley Forge was the turning point of the American Revolution

After the war ended, Washington immediately and voluntarily turned in his commission. He felt he had done his duty and wished to go home to Mount Vernon and his wife, Martha.  He was anxious to again work him farm.  But his fellow countrymen wanted him to lead the new nation, the United States of America.  Because he had such a strong sense of duty and he believed the cause of liberty was larger than any single individual he was elected as the first president.  He was very aware that he was being watched and he knew he was setting precedents.  He believed he must look the part of the President and made sure he dressed impeccably.  He was known for his forthright character and his unfailing integrity.

Most of the colonists were imagrants from Europe where Kings and Queens ruled. When Washington was elected president the citizens were unsure how to address him. Phrases of’ Your Highness’, ‘Mighty Ruler’, and ‘Most Honorable ‘were bantered about.  But when asked how to address him, Washington said; “Call me Mr. President.”  He considered himself to be a loyal patriotic citizen called by divine providence to lead his beloved country.  He had no desire to emulate a European royal court.  Washington was sworn in as President at Federal Hall on April 30, 1789.  When he took the oath of Office, he placed his hand on a Holy Bible, and added the words, “So help me God”.

Washington’s prayer for America follows:

“Almighty God;  We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large.  And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation.  Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.”

After serving two terms, Washington ended his presidency. He wanted to show that he was dispensable and asserted that the cause of liberty was larger than any single individual.  He felt leadership was a duty not an occupation.  He was first in the hearts of his countrymen and for many years every home in America had at least one picture of Washington, our national hero.

Washington died just three short years after leaving office, at the age of 67.  In his final instructions he ordered the 300 slaves at Mount Vernon to be freed after Martha’s death.

It’s Mom’s Fault!

Mom is one of the dearest words in the English language. Just the sound of Mom evokes loving thoughts. When we fall or get hurt, Mom is the first to know. When we achieve something noteworthy, Mom is the first one we want to tell because we want her to be proud of us. When we need a shoulder to cry one, Mom is our first choice. When we are discouraged, Mom gives us hope to carry on. When we need someone to give an honest opinion, Mom will do that.

My mom passed on several years ago and yet she still influences my decisions daily. So much of who I am is because of who she was. Below are some special qualities she gave to me.

Gardening.  Mom always had beautiful flowers around her home. She especially loved her Iris and Roses. For me there is nothing more rewarding that cultivating beautiful gardens.

Music. Some of my fondest memories are of our family harmonizing to Mom’s favorite songs as she played the melodies on her piano.

Vocabulary. Mom had a flair for words and enjoyed using an expressive vocabulary. Why use long sentences when one carefully chosen word can say it all?

Organization. Mom was very good at organizing. She had the ability to bring order to chaos. Everything in her home had a place and everything was kept it its place.

Spirituality. Everything Mom did was in alignment with her core values. Her spiritual values were operational 24/7.

Love. I knew Mom loved me unconditionally.

We all love our Moms. But in spite of that, psychologists tell us when they treat patients with mental dysfunctions, the number one culprit is Mom………..Things she did or did not do. It appears if we’re looking for someone to blame, Mom takes the number one spot. As I’ve said before, it is never what happened that upsets us. It is the story we tell ourselves about what happened that causes the problems. God knows exactly what He’s doing when He places us in families. If we are looking to escape responsibility for our actions, there are plenty of opportunities within a family to do so.

The truth is that we are all doing our best to accomplish what we think is best for ourselves.  Although Mom has responsibility to care for her children, she also has a life and must care for herself. Everyone has a different point of view.  We all perceive life through our limited perspectives. A child will see a situation and internalize it in a way totally foreign to an adult. Many debilitating beliefs are acquired when we are children.

As we mature spiritually, we come to realize that everyone is doing the best they can based on their current level of consciousness. When we know better, we do better. No one consciously chooses pain and dysfunction, but we do experience pain and dysfunction when we are run by our egoic minds. When we develop our consciousness and begin making decisions based on our higher self, we begin to live in the present moment free of pain and dysfunction.

In his book, The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle writes; “Nobody chooses dysfunction, conflict, pain. Nobody chooses insanity. They happen because there is not enough presence in you to dissolve the past, not enough light to dispel the darkness. You are not fully here. You have not quite woken up yet. In the meantime, the conditioned mind is running your life.

Similarly, if you are one of the many people who have an issue with their parents, if you still harbor resentment about something they did or did not do, then you still believe that they had a choice – that they could have acted differently. It always looks as if people had a choice, but that is an illusion. As long as your mind with its conditioned patterns runs your life, as long as you are your mind, what choice do you have? You are not even there. The mind-identified state is severely dysfunctional. It is a form of insanity. Almost everyone is suffering from this illness in varying degrees. The moment you realize this, there can be no more resentment. How can you resent someone’s illness? The only appropriate response is compassion.”

For now, Earlynn’s just sayin’; “Thanks, Mom, for all you have done for me.  I love you dearly.  I am truly sorry for any resntment I may have held believing you could have done  anything differently.  I pray my own kids will do the same for me,  forgiving me for my  moments of insanity.”
