Simple Acts of Kindness

It is said you can tell how spiritually evolved you are by the way you treat people who are helpless, elderly, mentally challenged, poor, disables, etc.  Simple acts of Kindness define who we are.  Wayne Dyer in his book, The Power of Intention tells the following story.

In Brooklyn, New York, Chush is a school that caters to learning-disabled children.  Some children remain in Chush for their entire school career, while others can be main-streamed into conventional schools.  At a Chush fundraiser dinner, the father of a Chush child delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.  After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he cried out, “Where is the perfection in my son, Shaya?  Everything God does is done with perfection.  But my child cannot remember facts and figures as other children do.  Where is God’s perfection?”  The audience was shocked by the question, pained by the father’s anguish, and stilled by the piercing query.

“I believe,” the father answered, “that when God brings a child like this into the world, the perfection that he seeks is in the way people react to this child.”  He then told the following story about his son, Shaya:

One afternoon Shaya and his father walked past a park where some boys Shaya knew were playing baseball.  Shaya asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?”  Shaya’s father knew that his son was not at all athletic and that most boys would not want him on their team.  But Shaya’s father understood that if his son was chosen to play, it would give him a sense of belonging.  Shaya’a father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shaya could play.  The boy looked around for guidance from him teammates, Getting none, he took matters into his own hands and said, “We’re losing by six runs, and the game is in the eighth inning.  I guess he can be on our team, and we’ll try to put him up to bat in the ninth inning.”

Shaya’s father was ecstatic as Shaya smiled broadly.  Shaya was told to put on a glove and go out to play in center field.  In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shaya’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shaya’s team scored again, and now had two outs and the bases loaded, with the potential winning run on base.  Shaya was scheduled to be up.  Would the team actually let Shaya bat at this juncture and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shaya was given the bat.  Everyone knew that it was all but impossible because Shaya didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, let alone hit with it.  However, as Shaya stepped up to the plate, the pitcher moved a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shaya could at least be able to make contact.  The first pitch came in, and Shaya swung clumsily and missed.  One of Shaya’s teammates came up to Shaya, and together they held the bat and faced the pitcher waiting for the next pitch.  The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly toward Shaya.  As the pitch came in, Shaya and his teammate swung  at the ball, and together they hit a slow ground ball to the pitcher.  The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could easily have thrown the ball to the first baseman.  Shaya would have been out and that would have ended the game.  Instead, the pitcher took the ball and threw it on a high arc to right field far beyond the reach of the first baseman.  Everyone started yelling, “Shaya, run to first. Run to first.”  Never in his life had Shaya run to first.  He scampered down the baseline wide-eyed and startled.  By the time he reached first base, the right fielder had the ball.  He could have thrown the ball to the second baseman who would tag out Shaya, who was still running.

But the right fielder understood what the pitcher’s intentions were, so he threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head.  Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second.”  Shaya ran toward second base as the runners ahead of him deliriously circled the bases toward home.  As Shaya reached second base, the opposing shortstop ran to him, turned him in the direction of third base, and shouted, “Run to third.”  As Shaya rounded third, the boys from both teams ran behind him screaming, “Shaya, run home.”  Shaya ran home, stepped on home plate, and all 18 boys lifted him on their shoulders and made him the hero, as he had just hit a “grand slam” and won the game for his team.

“That day,” said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “those 18 boys reached their level of God’s perfection.”

Simple Acts of Kindness like this restores our faith in the inherent goodness of mankind.

Evolution of Governance

Bruce H. Lipton, PH.D., and Steve Bherman, in their co-authored book, Spontaneous Evolution have an interesting discussion about the evolution of governance from Triangle, to Box,  to Circle,  to a Box in a Circle.   According to Jim Rough the following describes these three forms or governance:

Triangle:   The triangle represents a top-down hierarchy representative of dependance.  The triangle is elementary.  Just as children depend on their parents for sustenance, order and discipline, an uninformed population depends on an appointed leader to do this for them.  This form of governance is imposed by Kings and Queens on their subjects and colonies around the world and creates a state of dependancy.

Box:  This form of governance represents the metaphorical container which holds a set of rules and agreements created by the populace which are held sacred such as the U.S. Constitution.  This form of governance relies on the will of free people and represents independance.  Although America’s founders offered a vast improvement over the king’s monarchy, over the last two centuries; “We the People have gotten so far away from the actual drivers seat that we are now hostages in the back seat, if not locked in the trunk.  The thing that the people created is being driven by the self interests of those who percieve themselves as the politically fittest in the struggle for survival”.

Circle:  The circle represents interdependance.  Every point in a circle is equidistant from the center and is equally important to maintain the shape of the circle.  This does not mean co-dependance.  Interdependance means a community of capable, diverse, and co-equal citizenry who recognize that self-interest and mutual interest are one and the same.   The power of the circle as an access point to a field of higher wisdom was first recognized by Earth’s indigenous people.  Oren Lyons of the Onondaga Iroquis described the circle used in a tribal council meetings: “We meet and just keep talking until there’s nothing left but the obvious truth”.

Manitonquat, a Native American elder uses a circle to turn around the lives of hardened criminals in New England prisons.  He wrote: “Our people noticed long ago that the circle is the basic form of Creation.  In the circle we are all equal; there is no top or bottom, first or last, better or worse.  The key to the success of the circle is respect.  He further stated; “Most of these prisoners have never in their lives been listened to with respect.  Very few have persons in their experience who have shown them respect in any manner at all”.

Manitonquat uses a talking stick held by the person speaking to remind others to listen intently.  He tells prisoners; “No one was ever like you in all of the universe, and there will never be another one like you again.   Therefore, only you have your special gift, and you are the only one who can give it away…the rest of us need to receive your gift and hear your story.

65 to 85 percent of those released from New England’s prisons will be re-admitted. but only 5 to 10 percent of those who go though the circle program are re-admited.  Many of the prisoners who complete the program return to their homes determined to, “replace the pyramid of domination with the circle of equality and respect”.

Box in Circle:  The next evolutionary form of governance is represented as a box within a circle.  In this form of governance the laws and Constitution are held sacred and within the box but the box is encircled with collective wisdom and co-intellegence.  The  council circle is composed of randomly selected persons who focus on issues and policies that are mired in conflict, then glean common wisdom and make it available to the entire community or nation.

First of all these councils seek input from the broadest rnge of information and points of view, even ideas that seem to be outside the box.  Second,  they seek solutions that benefit the whole rather than special interest groups.  This eliminates the typical politics of pitting one party against another.  These councils offer dynamic, emergent solutions and can provide a nonjudgmental, heartfelt, energy driven creative thinking process in which people seek to invent new options that work for everyone.  Instead of negotiating, people seek break throughs everyone can support.

Regardless of the level of government or community in which they are used, such councils offer society a vision of what a healed body politic might look like.  The box containing  the rule of law inside the circular, coherent, central voice of We the People is a vision I pray we will see one day soon.

THE PROOF

Recently I was reminded of the story of James Twyman.  James says that when he was seventeen years old he visited a magic shop and found a little booklet called Hellstromism.  The book was about a unique form of mentalism.  Basically it teaches that when someone thinks about a thing very subtle physical reactions accompany the thought.  The author of the book, Alex Hellstrom, made a career performing this “magic”.  He would have people hide things in a theatre or other places.  Then he would seemingly read their minds and find the hidden objects.

James was fascinated with this mind reading and began practicing for anyone who was willing to work with him.  It didn’t take long for him to master the technique.  Then he had an idea to have someone to hide a book anywhere in the continental United States, then he would find it.  Finally the president of Hay House, Reid Tracy, decided to engage in a bet.  The bet was if James could find the hidden book, Hay House would donate $50,000.00 to the Hay House Foundation.  If James was not able to locate the book the donation would be made by James.

James found a volunteer who was given the book and $1,000.00 to hide the book anywhere within the continental U.S.  The only stipulation was  the book had to be hidden in an accessible place and could not be locked up somewhere.  After the book was hidden, the volunteer, a young lady, returned to meet with James.  The instructions were given to think of the place where the book was hidden.  At times James asked her to think “Stop” in her mind only as his hand moved across a map to the city in which the book was hidden.  James decided the book was hidden in Seattle.  The volunteer went with him to Seattle.   He asked her to continually think about the place the book was hidden.  After a short while James was led to a small park by the Space Needle where he found the book.

James Twyman has since written the book, The Proof.  He says; “There is a bond that exists between us, an unseen link that unites us and satisfies us in ways that noting else can.  In the end, what we’re seeking isn’t the riches of the world, but the richness of our souls; and this can only come from realizing that we are connected and whole.  Simply put:  we are One”.

You can watch a free video on YouTube, The Proof Movie.  It’s fascinating.

Gratitude, The Master Key

Gratitude is the key that opens the door to abundance.  Look around you.  Are you sitting in a comfortable chair?  Do you  have a roof over your head?  Is there food in your cupboard?  Is your living space warm in winter and cool in summer?  Do you use a scrub board to clean your clothes?  Are you able to listen to your favorite music or watch whatever you like on television?  When was the last time you expressed appreciation for any of these things, or are you in the habit of taking them for granted?

It is amazing how much joy comes to you when you begin a habit of gratitude.  Expressing thanks to those around you for their contribution to your welfare is such an easy thing to do, but is like a ray of sunshine to those who receive your appreciaion.  When someone cooks a meal for you, or washes your clothes, or works long hours to  make sure you have food and shelter, take the time to give them a sincere thank you.  When someone does even the slightest guesture of kindness, do not let the moment pass without showing appreciation.  We all love appreciative people.

My suggestion is get some thank you notes. When someone shows you  a kindness, send them a note.  I know how great I feel when someone takes time to send one to me.  It brightens my day.  One of the benefits of being grateful is others enjoy helping you.  We all want to be validated, to feel we are worthy.  And we are drawn to those people who appreciate us.

Never let a day pass without taking time before going to sleep to review the day.  Look for God’s hand in your day.  Acknowledge your blessings and those who have shown you kindness.  An attitude of gratitude opens the door to abundance.

This, Too, Shall Pass

An ancient Sufi Story tells of a king who was constantly torn between happiness and despondency.  Even the slightest thing could cause him great upset and his happiness would quickly turn into disappontment and despair.  The king finally got tired of himself and the life he was creating.  He sent for a wise man in his kingdom who was said to be enlightened.  The king told the wise man he wanted to be like him.  He asked if the wise man could bring something that could bring balance, serenity and wisdom into his life.  The king said he would pay any price for such a tool.  “The cost of such a tool will be more than the value of the your entire kingdom” explained the wise man. ” But so long as you honor it, I will give it as a gift to you”.  The king promised to honor the tool and the wise man departed.

A few weeks later, he returned and gave the king an ornately carved jade box.  Within the box was a simple gold ring inscribed with these words: “This, too, will pass.”  The king was puzzled about the meaning of the inscription, so the wise man explained; “Wear this ring always.  Whatever happens, before you call it good or bad, touch this ring and read the inscription.  That way you’ll always be at peace”.

As Eckhart Tolle writes in his book, A New Earth: “Those words inscribed on the ring are not telling you that you should not enjoy the good in your life, nor are they merely meant to provide some comfort in times of suffering.  They have a deeper purpose – to make you aware of the fleetingness of every situation, which is due to the transience of all forms – good or bad”.

When faced with difficult situtions the pain is eased by recognizing the impermanence of things.   Not only the so called bad things, but good things also are trasient.  When you understand that the good times are also impermanent, you can enjoy them and appreciate them more fully because you know these times are transient.  It allows you to honor the things of this world without giving them too much importance and significance and not get too attached.

Once you see and accept the transience of all things and the inevitability of change you can enjoy the pleasures of the world while they last without fear of loss or anxiety about the future, for “this too shall pass.

Abraham Lincoln

On the morning of April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln lay dying in a hall bedroom of a cheap lodging house across the street from Ford’s Theater.  Lincoln‘s long body lay stretched diagonally across an old sagging bed that was too short for him.  As Lincoln lay dying, Secretary of War Stanton said, “There lies the most perfect ruler of men that the world has ever seen.”

Dale Carnegie studied the life Abraham Lincoln for over ten years and took three years to compile and write the book entitled Lincoln the Unknown.    He especially studied Lincoln’s method of dealing with people.  Lincoln was known as a very patient man who almost never criticised anyone.  Time after time, during the Civil War Lincoln installed a new General and each one – McClellan, Pope, Burnside, Hooker, Meade blundered tragically.  Lincoln “with malice toward none, with charity for all”, held his peace.  One of his favorite quotations was; “Judge not that ye be not judged”.  Whenever he heard those around him criticize southern people he would reply; “Don’t criticize them; they are just what we would be under similar circumstances”.

At one point in the war Lincoln saw the perfect opportunity to take General Lee by surprise and capture him bringing and end the war immediately.  So with high hope, Lincoln ordered General Meade to attack Lee immediately.  Lincoln telegraphed his orders and sent a special messenger to Meade demanding immediate action.

General Meade did the very opposite of what Lincoln had ordered.  He hesitated.  He procrastinated.  Finally the opportunity to capture Lee passed and he escaped over the Potomac with his forces.

Lincoln was furious.  He cried to his son, Robert, “Great God!  What does this mean”?  We had them within our grasp, and had only to stretch forth our hands and they were ours; yet nothing that I could say or do could make the army move.  Under the circumstances, almost any general could have defeated Lee.  If I had gone up there, I could have whipped him myself”.

In bitter disappointment Lincoln penned a letter to General Meade.  As reserved as Lincoln could be his letter shows the measure to which Lincoln showed his disappointment:

My dear General,

I do not believe you appreciate the magnitude of the misfortune involved in Lee’s escape.  He was within our easy grasp, and to have closed upon him would, in connecton with our other late successes, would have ended the war.  As it is, the war will be prolonged indefinitely.  If you could not safely attack Lee last Monday, how can you possibly do so south of the river, when you can take with you very few – no more than two-thirds of the force you then had in hand?  It would be unreasonable to expet and I do not expect that you can now effect much.  Your golden opportunity is gone, and I am distressed immeasurably because of it”.  Meade never saw that letter.  It was found unmailed among Lincoln’s papers after his death.  Where did Lincoln’s steadfast resolve to refrain from harsh criticism come from?

As a young man in Indiana he not only criticized but he wrote letters and poems criticizing others.  When he became a practicing lawyer in Illinois, he attacked opponents in letters published in newspapers.  In the fall of 1842 he ridiculed a politician named James Shields.  Shields was very vain.  Lincoln made fun of him in an anonymous letter published in the Springfield Journal.  The town thought the article very funny, but Shields who was proud boiled with indignation.  He found out who wrote the letter and set out on his horse to confront Lincoln.  He challenged Lincoln to a duel.  Lincoln was opposed to dueling and didn’t want to fight, but felt he couldn’t get out of it and save his honor.  He was given his choice of weapons.  He chose cavalry broadswords because he had long arms and he took lessons in sword fighting from a West Point graduate.  On the set date he and Shields met on a sandbar in the Mississippi River prepared to fight to the death.  At the last minute their seconds interrupted and stopped the duel.

That was a frightening moment in Lincoln’s life  and it taught him an invaluable lesson in dealing with people.  Never again did he write an insulting letter.  And never again did he ridicule anyone.  In fact he almost never criticized anyone for anything.

The lesson here is just because we make mistakes doesn’t mean we are not destined for greatness.  We can overcome our mistakes and use them to make us stronger.

The Law of Sowing and Reaping

The spiritual law of sowing and reaping states that we will always reap what we have sown.  If we plant peas in our garden and we  keep it watered and weeded we will reap a harvest of peas.  We all understand the law as it pertains to our gardens, but we sometimes loose sight of the law as it pertains to our personal life.  Another closely reated spiritual law states whatever we want we must first give to another.

Take a moment – look at your personal life.  Are there areas of lack?  If so, identify those areas.   Ask “What seeds am I  sowing”?  Many times we are like a man sitting before the fireplace shivering.  Before he can get heat from the fireplace, he must first light the fire.  If you really want something give it to another,  light the fire.

If you want respect – give it to others.  If you want abundance – be generous with others.  If you want others to listen to you – listen to them.   If you pay little attention to the needs of others the universe will pay little attention to your needs.  If you want success welcome it wherever you see it, especially your friends.  Be sincere and lavish in your praise of others’ success and you plant seeds for your own success.

Whenever you feel  lack in your life, remember the law of sowing and reaping.  Giving to others will plant the seeds for your own abundance.

Seeds

Have you ever looked at seeds and marveled at their amazing power?  Think about it.  Look at a seed, let’s say a tomato seed.  The seed looks very much like a green pepper seed or a hot pepper seed.  But it is a tomato seed.  If you plant it in nutrient rich soil where it receives plenty of sunshine and you water it regularly it will produce a tomato plant.   That tomato plant will produce tomatoes.  Each tomato has within it many seeds.  One little seed can produce thousands of seeds.  The tomato seed knows it is a tomato seed.  It will only produce tomatoes.  It doesn’t get confused and accidentally produce peppers.  When you slice open a seed you cannot see it’s tomato essence, but the essence is there.  That little seed contains all that is needed to produce more tomatoes.  The same is true of all seeds.  Even though we cannot see what it is in the seed that creates, all seeds create and replicate.  William Jennings Bryan wrote this about the mystery of a watermelon:

“I have observed the power of the watermelon seed.  It has the power of drawing from the ground and through itself 200,000 times its weight.  When you can tell me how it takes this material and out of it colors an outside surface beyond the imitation of art, and then forms inside of it a white rind and within that again a red heart, thickly inlaid with black seeds, each one of which in turn is capable of drawing through itself 200,000 times its weight – when you can explain to me the mystery of a watermelon, you can ask me to explain the mystery of God.”

So next time you eat a piece of fruit, think of the miraculous power of the seeds within and thank God for this marvelous mystery.

Do You Really Have To?

How many times have you heard someone say; “I have to do this or that”?  If you’re like me, you hear it often.  What does it mean to say; “I  have to?”  It infers you have no choice,  that you are a victim.  You do have a choice.  When you recognize that you do have a choice you free yourself.  In reality our choices do come with consequences.  So when you hear someone say; “I have to pay my taxes,” the truth is; “No, you do not.”  You, in fact choose to pay your taxes rather than accept the consequence.  Accept responsibility for your choices.  Recognize your choices.  The truth of the matter is there is only one thing in this life over which we have no choice.  And it is that as long as you inhabit a body you “have to” take up space.  So next time you are tempted to say; “I have to“, stop for just a minute and recognize you choose to do it.  Replace “have to” with “I want to”.  Because that is the truth of it.

The Eagle and the Condor

Over many centuries the story of the Eagle and the Condor has been held as a prophecy by indigenous peoples all around the world from the monasteries in the Himalayas to the depths of the Amazon to the peaks of the Andes and into the Mayan cities of Central America.  The prophecy states that the eagle and the condor at one time flew together in harmony in the skies.  The eagle represents the brain… masculine, science, the rational and material.  The condor represents the heart……feminine, intuitive, nature.  The prophecy states in the 1490’s the paths of the condor and eagle would converge and the eagle would drive the condor to the verge of extinction and the eagle would dominate.  In fact the condor did become almost extinct.   The prophecy continues five Hundred years would pass until a new age would begin.  At which time the eagle and the condor will have the opportunity to fly together along the same path and the Earth will awaken to a new consciousness.

There are many interpretations to this prophecy.  Many including myself see this prophecy being fulfilled in the melding and balancing of the masculine and the feminine.  When we look at the state of our world, it is easy to see the masculine has been allowed to overshadowed the feminine.  Now is the time to bring back balance.  This is a time to nurture our earth and honor our hearts and intuition.  The intellect is limited and balance cannot be achieved through the intellect alone.  Our brain and heart, science and nature, rational and intuitive must be in balance for Earth to evolve to a new age of consciousness.

Another interpretation relates to the settling of North America.  In the 1490’s Columbus discovered North America.  Many believe the colonists represent the attributes of the eagle in the settlement of North America.  The native Indians are said to represent the attributes of the Condor.  The native Indians numbered in the millions when the first colonists arrived but were down to less than 300,000 within four hundred years.  North Americans have given honor and privilege to the intellect while neglecting nature.  By failing to recognize we are part of Mother Nature our world grew out of balance.  We are dependent on the Earth, the sun, and water for our very existence.  It is time to balance the intellect and nature.  The indigenous people have continued to honor Mother Nature and understand they are part of the Earth but they have not shared in the blessings the intellect has brought.  It is time for the eagle and the condor to fly together.  When we journey together and share the best of our cultures Earth will evolve.

I think it’s a beautiful prophecy and I’m sure there are many other interpretations of it, but it gives us much to think about, doesn’t it?
