A Matter of Perception

Two different perceptions

Young Woman or Old Hag?

What you see when you look at the above picture is A Matter of Perception.  Some see a young woman while others see an old hag.  So it is with life, for the most part we see what we are looking for.  We have preconceived  ideas about our world and about our individual lives.  And when we staunchly believe in our perception we believe it to be a fact which does not allow for any other reality.

Taking this into account, let’s see what has happened in the past when society held fast to incorrect perceptions.  About 500 years ago Nicolas Copernicus looked into the sky and realized something quite different than what was believed to be true at that time.  Church scholars taught that the Earth was the center of the universe.  Copernicus came to the astonishing conclusion that the earth rotated on its axis daily as it orbited the sun annually.  At that time “truth” was considered to be that which the Church espoused.  The Church declared Copernicus guilty of blasphemy and they clung to their old beliefs.  Galileo ninety years later was forced at the point of a sword to renounce his support of Copernicus and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner.  These same Church leaders followed Copernicus’ mathematical formulas to reconcile their religious calendar.  The truth is that no matter how truthful a new perception is, it takes time for human consciousness to accept major changes.

Over 100 years have passed since Einstein proved that everything in our universe is made of energy and is intertwined.  Yet the vase majority of humanity still clings to the principles of Newtonian physics which says the world is a mechanism engaged in a series of cause and effect actions and reactions.

Humanity is now at a critical juncture.  Science is now showing  we are all connected.  We are all part of a web of life.  We can no longer persue survival of the fittest.  Survival of the most cooperative should be our motto.  We can no longer afford to persue our selfish interests on a personal level or on  a community level or on a world level.  As we have pursued Newtonian physics, we have  neglected nature believing Man should dominate and control the world.  Now we know we must live within the matrix of mother Earth seeking to keep a natural balance.  We are now experiencing what gluttony and pollution has brought to our world.

Our problems are not with the data.  We have tons of data.  Our problem has been with interpreting the data, it’s a matter of perception.  Rene’ Descates advised us to doubt everything.  Of course everything is not wrong, but now is the time for us to begin to reinterpret our data.  We need to see our problems in a new light.  We must be willing to open to new ways of thinking.   When we do so we will find ways to bring peace and balance.  We’ve all read or known someone who has been given a dire diagnosis but rather than giving up has gone into a complete remission.  Our world can be like that.  If we as human inhabitants on planet earth realize our future depends on cooperation we can heal our planet and create the major shift needed to create a new paradigm.  We can heal our planet.  That healing will come as a matter of changing perception.
