Here’s something to ponder. If we end the delusion of time so that we have no past or future what do we have? All the great spiritual masters tell us that time is a delusion. So, again I ask; “If we have no past or future what do we have?” Of course, the answer must be, “We have NOW or the present moment.”
Have you ever done anything, thought anything, or felt anything outside of NOW? Do you think you will ever be able to do so? Is it possible for anything to happen outside of NOW? The answers are, of course, very obvious.
Nothing has ever happened in the past. All things have happened in the NOW.
Nothing will ever happen in the future because it must happen in the NOW.
It takes a leap of faith to truly understand why time is a delusion. It is something our mind cannot understand…..but You can.
The future is an imagined NOW and the past is a memory of a former NOW. All we ever have is the present moment…the NOW. It is said that suffering needs time; it cannot survive in the NOW. In the absence of time your problems dissolve.
Our minds love to keep us in the past or the future. We, therefore, miss the opportunities in the NOW. The great Zen master, Rinzai, would often raise his finger and ask; “What, at this moment, is lacking?” The question does not require an answer from the mind, but points to the fact that we feel fear because of thoughts based in the past and future. But this very moment of NOW feels alive and radiates energy which eminates from Being.
Eckhart Tolle in The Power of Now writes: “Here is the key: End the delusion of time. Time and mind are inseparable. Remove time from the mind and it stops – unless you choose to use it. To be identified with your mind is to be trapped in time: the compulsion to live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation. This creates an endless preoccupation with past and future and an unwillingness to honor and acknowledge the present moment and allow it to be. The compulsion arises because the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whatever form. Both are illusions.”
He goes on to state that since time is a delusion, it is not ‘precious’ as our minds perceive it to be. Only the NOW is precious because it is our reality. NOW is all there is. NOW is the space within which everything in life unfolds and is the only point of access into the timeless and formless realm of Being. The moment we grasp this there is a shift in consciousness from mind to Being.
For now, Earlynn’s just sayin’: “Let’s honor the present moment…the NOW…for it is the seat of action.”
